Which CSCS card do you need?

There are thirteen CSCS cards to choose from. Review the descriptions of each to understand which you may be best suited to and to know which type of CITB test you will likely need to pass. For the latest information, always review the CITB guidance before booking your test.

Academically Qualified Person

The Academically Qualified Person card is valid for five years and is for individuals who have completed a qualifying construction related qualification at one of the following levels:

  • Degree
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)
  • Higher National Certificate (HNC)
  • Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Certificate
  • Some NEBOSH diplomas and certificates.

For this card, you should practice the Managers and Professionals Test

Apprentice

The Apprentice card is for individuals who are on a construction related recognised apprenticeship.

This card is issued at no cost and is valid for four years and six months. When it expires, cardholders should have finished their apprenticeship and so apply for a Skilled Worker card.

Different courses and tests are acceptable to acquire the card.

For this card, you should practice the Operatives Test.

Blue Skilled Worker

The Blue Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and is for individuals who have completed a qualifying construction related qualification:

  • NVQ/SVQ level 2
  • SVQ at SCQF level 5
  • An employer sponsored apprenticeship
  • A City and Guilds Craft Certificate (CGLI)
  • An approved apprenticeship to the CSCS Standard

For this card, you should select the practice test that is appropriate to your desired occupation. This could be either the Operatives Test or the Specialists Test.

Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager

This card is for Supervisors, Managers and Technical Workers with at least one year of prior site experience and are registered to complete a qualifying construction related Technical, Supervisory or Management (TSM) qualification:

  • NVQ/SVQ Level 3
  • SVQ at SCQF level 6 or higher.

This card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. When it expires, cardholders should have finished their course and so apply for an appropriate skill related CSCS card. 

For this card, you should select the practice test that is appropriate to your occupation. This could be either the Operatives Test or the Specialists Test.

Experienced Worker

The Experienced Worker card is for workers with at least one year of prior site experience and are registered to complete a qualifying construction related qualification:

  • NVQ/SVQ level 2
  • SVQ at SCQF level 5 or higher.

This card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. When it expires, cardholders should have completed their qualification and so apply for an appropriate skill related CSCS card.

For this card, you should practice the Operatives Test.

Gold Skilled Worker

The Gold Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and is for workers who have completed a qualifying construction related qualification:

  • NVQ/SVQ level 3
  • SVQ at SCQF level 6
  • An employer sponsored apprenticeship that included the award of a City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate
  • An apprenticeship to a CSCS approved standard

For this card, you should select the practice test that is appropriate to your desired occupation. This could be either the Operatives Test or the Specialists Test.

Industry Placement

The Industry Placement card is for workers undergoing a qualifying construction related qualification which requires a work placement lasting a minimum of 30 days. Examples of such qualifications may include:

  • T-Levels
  • Trainee Skills Development Programmes

Other training programmes may be accepted and evidence should be submitted as part of the application process if a worker wishes to apply for this card.

This card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. When it expires, cardholders should have completed their qualification and so apply for an appropriate skill related CSCS card.

For this card, you should practice the Operatives Test.

Labourer

The Labourer card is for workers who are not in a skilled occupation and should possess a minimum of of one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
  • Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate
  • NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) unit

An alternative qualification may be accepted so check on the CSCS website for the current list of acceptable alternatives to the Level 1 qualification.

This card is valid for five years and cannot be renewed. When it expires, cardholders should apply for a new Labourer card.

For this card, you should practice the Operatives Test.

Manager

The Manager card is valid for five years and is for managers who possess one of the following qualifying construction management or technical related qualification:

  • NVQ Level 4, 5, 6 or 7
  • SVQ Level 4, 5, 6, or 7
  • SVQ at SCQF Level 10 or 11

For this card, you should practice the Managers and Professionals Test

Professionally Qualified Person

The Professionally Qualified Person card is valid for five years and is for workers who are members of a CSCS approved professional body.

Provisional

The Provisional card is for individuals who are working a probationary period whilst an employer assesses their suitability.

This card is only valid for six months and cannot be renewed.

When it expires, cardholders should have either completed or registered for a construction related qualification and so apply for an appropriate CSCS card for their job.

For this card, you should practice the Operatives Test.

Supervisory

The Supervisory card is valid for five years and is for workers in supervisor and technical occupations who possess a qualifying supervisory or technical related qualification:

  • NVQ Level 3 or 4
  • SVQ Level 3 or 4

For this card, you should practice the Specialists Test.

Trainee

The Trainee card is for workers who are registered to complete a qualifying construction related qualification.
